Trauma doesn’t always come in the form of an IED or a car accident…
Sometimes trauma is a series of events that happen over time.
Sometimes trauma is what doesn’t happen to us, the things we are unable to experience.
You don’t need permission to feel traumatized just because someone had it worse.
Our bodies and our minds respond to trauma; it’s not a choice.
You are not what happened to you. You are not your trauma.
Trauma is a lot like compost; it’s shit, but that doesn’t mean something beautiful can’t grow from it.
You can’t ignore the trauma or pretend it doesn’t exist.
It creeps into our relationships; it makes us feel unwanted, unloved.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way.
Trauma doesn’t have to control your life.
You can live your life fully again.
I’m Dr Bree Shelby, PhD
Psychological Associate in Paducah, KY
I want you to know that you don’t have to carry what others try to give you.
If it doesn’t affirm and honor your being…
If it doesn’t feel true…
If it requires you to take responsibility for someone else…
If it undermines, minimizes, or disregards your humanness or experiences…
If it feels like shame…
Kindly leave it at their feet.
